Light Cruisers

Tatsuta

  • Sunk by USS Sand Lance on the night of 12-13 of March of 1944, NNE of Hachijōjima.

  • Her name was carried first by a 1894 unprotected cruiser sole in her class.

Isuzu

  • Sunk 7 April 1945 by United States Navy off Sumbawa, Java Sea

  • The only light cruiser which underwent conversion into a dedicated anti-aircraft/anti-submarine cruiser.

  • Isuzu class destroyer escort JDS Isuzu had been commissioned to Maritime Self Defense Force (1961-1992).

Abukuma

  • Named after a "River".

  • On October 1930, collided with light cruiser Kitakami. lost her bow while Kitakami only sustained light damage above the waterline. She was later fitted from the old spoon-shaped bow to a new double-curved one.

  • Sunk on 26 October, 1944 after being bombed by USAAF B-24 Liberator off the Negros Islands, Mindanao Sea

  • She was escorted by Ushio en route to repairs when she sunk. Ushio then rescued more than half of her crew.

Yura

  • Named after the Yura River in the Kansai region of Japan

  • Laid down on May 21, 1921, launched February 15, 1922, and commissioned on March 20, 1923.

  • Her ability to carry Seaplane Bombers and Fighters may be a reference to how she was used as a test platform for aircraft catapults in 1930.

  • Yura was involved in the sinking of Prince Wales and Repulse, and covered the landings of Japanese troops in Malaya and Sarawak. Afterwards, she participated in the Indian Ocean raid, the Battle of Midway, and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons.

Sendai

  • Sunk on 3 November 1943 by United States Navy cruisers at the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay.

  • Despite having been built slightly after Yuubari, the Sendai class was a development of the older Nagara-class cruisers. Their design is very similar.

  • Named after the Sendai River in southern Kyūshū.

  • Sendai loves night battles mainly because most of her operations were night attacks such as Invasion of Malaya, Battle off Endau, Battle of Guadalcanal as well as Battle of Empress Augusta Bay. In her final battle, she was set afire at 0050 hrs but remained afloat until 0430 hrs before sinking.

Kinu

  • Sunk 26 October 1944 bombed by USN aircraft SW of Masbate, Sibuyan Sea

  • Her wreckage was explored by USN divers in 1945. Uranami's wreckage rests nearby.

  • Though the origin of her name is a proper noun of river, 鬼怒 literally means "Ogre's Rage", and this accounts for her unique pose and character.

Tama

  • Sunk by USS Jallao northeast of Luzon at 21°23′N 127°19′E, 25 October 1944.

  • Her in-game voice is very soft spoken, so in terms of temperament Tama is usually depicted as rather laid back. True to her cat-like nature she is often portrayed sleeping or lounging, especially under a kotatsu. She is most frequently paired with her sisters, especially Kuma.
